SCHOOL SUPPLY GIVE AWAY

The Outreach Team will be passing out school supplies to approximately 400 children in the Willis Independent School District on Saturday, August 14, 2010, from 8—11:30 a.m.  The Team is asking  for  monetary  donations  from those  of you who wish to support this effort.   Mark  your checks or  envelopes  “School   Supplies”.  The Team is also asking  for  volunteers to  prepare school supply packets and   help   distribute   them.    This   effort  is   being co-chaired by SANDRA  ADEN and JEAN BURNS. Contact JEAN BURNS at 936/890-9658 for further information.

BACKPACK PROGRAM

ANN BRITTAIN and REV. WOODWARD are working out the details of a “Backpack” program sponsored by the Montgomery County Food Bank.  Our commitment will be pick-up  and delivery of  backpacks, with  food  from  the  Food Bank, to some Willis schools.  The schools will give the backpacks to those children who don’t have much access to food over a weekend.  Occasionally, we may give a financial boost to the program.  As soon as the details are worked out, this information will be passed on to the congregation.  This is just another way YOUR Church is trying  to  help  solve  Willis  area  problems.  Peace, brothers and sisters—RAY ROBERTSON, Outreach Chairman.

MISSION OPPORTUNITY

Following the loss of a loved one by a Church member, the Bereavement Team, with the help of many of our Church members,  takes food to the home or prepares a reception for the family in the Family Life Center.  Most of the time, when a Church member sees either JAN DIAL or SUE  ANN POWELL’s  name on the Caller I.D., they answer the phone, saying “what can I bring?” 

We recently reached out to a family who had no Church home and who requested that REV. WOODWARD perform their loved one’s funeral service.  Along with the “sandwich fixings”, chips and dips, cookies and a fruit tray provided by our generous members, REV. WOODWARD tucked a Prayer Blanket in with the food.  Those of you who have been on Mission trips know the feeling of reaching out to a complete stranger and offering them hope and comfort.  Delivering this food to a stranger closer to home elicited some of those same feelings.  Thank you, members, for your unselfish response and participation in this local mission opportunity.

Over time, our Prayer Blanket ministry has blessed and comforted many people, and this was a wonderful example of a way to  combine two of our Outreach ministries into one.
